LOCATION DESCRIPTION
Neighborhood: HAIGHT ASHBURY.
THE FAMOUS HAIGHT ASHBURY NEIGHBORHOOD
The Haight Ashbury is the most colorful neighborhood in this colorful city. Any day of the week, the Haight is filled with a potent mix of locals and tourists. Many shops are geared towards visitors seeking a connection with the neighborhood’s 1960’s storied past. The carefree energy and strong vintage atmosphere comes through everywhere, from the clothing shops to the ornate Victorian architecture. The area is home to San Francisco’s best music store, a number of excellent vintage shops, an excellent bookstore with performance space, ethnic restaurants, and bars ranging from live music dives to sophisticated cocktail lounges.
The birthplace of America’s counter-culture, the Haight was Ground Zero during the summer of 1967, a.k.a. The Summer of Love back when hippies and musicians flocked to this neighborhood. Even long after the Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, and the Grateful Dead have moved on, and its head shops have been largely replaced by fashion boutiques, chic restaurants and hip cafés, the Haight still attracts artists and musicians as well as affluent young Techies who have bought up the colorful Victorian homes (the Haight is home to the largest population of the city’s young single male multimillionaires). Its colorful past is readily visible on the street, in the shops, and among its international visitors even as its current young, well educated population form a “lattes and laptops” demographic.
Two blocks down from Haight Street is Golden Gate Park’s “Panhandle” section (located between Oak and Fell Streets) and just a short walk away is the De Young Museum, Academy of Sciences, Botanical Gardens and Arboretum, and The Sharon Arts Studio.
